It's the St. Regis Hotel for our MLA headquarters in May, 2000. We are continuing the tradition of boutique type hotels, like the Pacific Plaza in Seattle and Motel 6 in Chicago. The St. Regis is in the heart of downtown Vancouver, 620 Dunsmuir, cross-street, Seymour. The hotel is just a 5-minute walk to MLA's convention site. The sessions take place at the Waterfront Centre and Pan Pacific Hotels, all part of a convention complex at the waterfront.
The St. Regis has been fully renovated since 1997, with clean, comfortable--if not overly spacious rooms. There are 72 rooms in a 6-story building. As it is a renovated, but older structure, it may not meet all the needs of the physically challenged. The hotel is also within walking distance of many of the interesting areas of Vancouver, including Gastown, possibly Chinatown, Yaletown, Robson Street (a.k.a. Robsonstrasse). Also close by are some excellent museums. And you'll find a very large indoor shopping mall with an extensive food court just a block away. Davie Street area nightlife is do-able, distance-wise. Public transportation in this area is excellent. And there is a Starbucks just 10 feet away from the hotel.
We are holding a block of 20 rooms from May 4 until May 11. They consist of 14 rooms containing 2 double beds. The remaining 6 rooms each contain one queen bed. The rooms with 2 double beds can accommodate up to 4 persons; the rooms with queen bed can accommodate up to 2 persons. Please note: room rate is based on 1 or 2 persons. There is an additional nightly charge of $10.00 CAD per person in excess of 2 persons in the room. Our SIG room rate is $105.00 CAD per night, plus 17% tax. (Up to 7% of the tax is refundable for non-Canadian citizens, but a form needs to be filled out). Exchange rate as of today would be about $70.79 USD, vs. $105.00 CAD. The room rate does include a continental breakfast. Yes, folks, the communal breakfast is back!!!
Cancellation policy requires 24 hours advance notification. The St. Regis is willing to be flexible for mis-arrivals due to transportation problems, etc. These rates should hold if you want to extend your time a bit before or after. But it is advisable to make these plans earlier, rather than later. Reservations can be guaranteed with a credit card to 1-800-770-7929. For reservations purpose, refer to our group as "Special Interest Group." So when making reservations, please identify you are part of the "Special Interest Group." Reservations can also be made through e-mail: info@stregishotel.com --and, again, identify yourself as part of the "Group."
It is always better to make your reservations early; you can always cancel or adjust, subject to availability. The month of May begins prime tourist season in Vancouver; so things will most likely become rather tight. Our arrangements, this time, do not provide for a contract; so there is no cut-off date for room release. Rooms will be rented on an availability basis. I will monitor our reservations, and keep in regular contact with the hotel.
Private shuttle service is available to and from the airport running about $10.00 CAD at this time, one way. A cab ride, to and from the airport, runs about $22.00 CAD at this time on way.
Remember, Vancouver's lush greenery is due to its fair quota of precipitation. But it will more likely sprinkle than pour buckets of rain. Pack an umbrella anyway. Also, sunrises will be early, and sunsets will be late due to Vancouver's northerly latitude.
For any questions, etc., please feel free to advise. I will update, amend, and repeat as need be.
