Minutes

The meeting was called to order at 4:00 p.m., and conducted by Dorrie Slutsker. Dorrie was substituting for co-convener Peter Jones who could not make the meeting. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved.

Richard S. Klein gave a program report. He spoke of the two-year period taken to develop this program. The Public Health/Health Administration Section is the lead section. Co-sponsoring sections include the Drug Information/Pharmacy, International Cooperation, Federal Libraries, Consumer Health. The other participating SIG was Rob Mackes of the Rehabilitation Hospitals. Special thanks to Rob for mailing the handouts to the meeting in Orlando. Rehabilitation Hospitals' member Amy Frey did an excellent bibliography on Travel and Rehabilitation Medicine. We did engineer a letter of understanding with our speaker, Dr. Patricia Walker. Dr. Walker's background includes at least two decades experience in Travel Medicine and working with refugees in Southeast Asia. A budget and expense report is forthcoming.

Dorrie Slutsker asked that participants to please introduce themselves. We already have an intended program for 2002, Dallas, Transgendered medicine. Therefore, ideas for program planning for San Diego MLA, 2003 were tossed in the hat. Topics included: supporting gay/lesbian students. Such could be reflected in direct resources to consumers or clinicians; or reflected in the collection services or with special exhibits. Lesbian health was also another subject mentioned. Other topics concerned: Consumer settings; issues in both information setting, or patient care. Perhaps a representative from GLAAD might be available to speak on relevant health related issues. We reviewed our previous programs to see what has been done.

Discussion then focuses on whether to become a MLA section or remain a SIG. Becoming a section means by-laws, dues, officially sponsoring programs, and formal reports. Remaining a SIG allows for flexibility. The only downsize seems to be the inability to access funds for programming. Consensus of those at the meeting tending to opt to remain a SIG. It was mentioned to ask for "feelers" to the Section Board. Perhaps create a memorandum of understanding from a SIG to a Section for support. Relevant Issues comes to mind.

Our SIG name was now changed to add the "T" Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual-Transgendered Special Interest Group. It was approved the Section Council.

Our new co-convener nominees are Mitch Walters and Bill Fleming. We will talk about staggering officers at strategic times. It was mentioned that there were no female co-chairs at this time. Mitch and Bill were proposed for their offices and duly elected. Jamie Lamkin remains as newsletter editor. It was suggested that there be a guide to LGBT activities in the local area at the upcoming MLA meetings.

Gerry Perry sat in as proxy for Bill Fleming (this coming year's program arranger), at the 2002 program planning sessions. The program would deal with the health concerns for people who are transgendered; informing health care providers who may be treating the trangendered. Discussion turned to the Relevant Issues Section. They are pursuing three programs; the need to investigate sponsorship.

We have been approached by the African-Americans SIG, under-served populations. Mention was made of the Mary Kay Foundation: violence and women; violence in the family. Gerry mentioned that SIGs are coming to LBGT. The need to look at the relationships. There is the need for strong education about understanding SIGS. People were encouraged to attend the Travel Medicine Program tomorrow on Wednesday May 29, 2001. The meeting adjourned about 5:15 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Richard S. Klein
