Update: Warren Hawkes has advised me of a $10.00 charge per person, in excess of 2 persons occupying a room at the Ameri-Suites, West End, our SIG hotel in Dallas. And my announcement earlier this year did NOT specify such additional charges. I re-checked with the hotel reservation department. Sure enough, the $10.00 charge per person, in excess of 2, is indeed in effect. And this policy applies for existing room bedding. Sorry, folks, for the omission. And thanks, Warren, for pointing this out. It helps fine-tune the reservation process, and I think should prevent some mis-understandings. Though I think it is still a good rate, even with the extra charge.

It's the AmeriSuites, West End for our MLA headquarters for May, 2002! Our choice of the AmeriSuites was determined by 1). The competitive price (vs. the convention hotel). 2). The opportunity for us to be together as a SIG. 3). Easily commutable on the light rail to the Adams Mark Hotel, the venue for MLA. And 4). Better dining opportunities. The DART light rail (West End) stop is just a block and a half away from the hotel. We are holding a block of 20 rooms (with some fine-tuning at the beginning and end of the stay) from May 16 until May 23. Hotel address is 1907 North Lamar Street, Dallas, TX 75202.

The AmeriSuites is offering us a SIG rate of $125.00 per night plus 15% tax, and includes a buffet continental breakfast. All our designated rooms have 2 double beds, accommodating up to 4 persons using existing bedding. King bedded rooms can be requested, subject to availability. Reservations can be guaranteed for the first night with a major credit card. You need to call the hotel directly at 1-214-999-0500, and mention you are part of the Special Interest Group. A check can be substituted for the credit card guaranteed. Sorry, but there is no toll free number. And reservations cannot be done through the AmeriSuites reservation service for purposes of the SIG group rate.

Cancellation policy requires notification 24 hours prior to arrival. It is advisable to make your plans earlier rather than later. (It is understandable, a good number of us may not know if they can come or not for a good while). However, reservations will be closely and continually monitored. If we sense there is added interest, we would want to increase our block; and if attendance is not up to expectation, that has to be dealt with. With a credit card guarantee, you can always cancel or adjust, subject to availability.

When you make your reservation, ask for Reservations, and also make sure you get your Confirmation number. It is probably advisable to get the name of the person you spoke, along with date and time. Written and faxed confirmations are available only upon request. Cancellations should be done directly with the hotel instead of the AmeriSuites reservations service. After May 3, 2002, reservations will be taken on a space and rate available basis only. Also, feel free to contact me, if anyone is having problems, "misunderstandings," and clarification needs etc. with reservations.

Hotel features include 149 suites (yes, these are suites, with a good amount of room), refrigerator, microwave, wet bar, coffeemaker with coffee, free USA Today and voice mail. Rooms are also equipped with data port telephones and in-room high speed Internet access with those toting laptops. Other creature comforts include hair dryer in suite, iron/ironing board, and 26" cable TV. There is an outdoor heated pool (Mid-May is also pool weather in Dallas), a fitness center, and free USA Today. Also, the West End Entertainment center is just a block away, as is the Arts District. This locale is also convenient to a great variety of sightseeing spots, historic districts, and unique shopping, etc. Parking is available at valet and self-parking rates.

Airport transportation is available to the AmeriSuites as follows: At this time, there is the shuttle service which runs about $17.00 per person to and from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. It appears that Super Shuttle also has airport transportation, and other similar services available. To and from this airport, taxis now run about $35.00 to $40.00 per ride each way. Also look for the transportation information from the MLA conference registration packet and possibly timely issues of the MLA News. And you can always check with the hotel. Also, some flights go into Dallas Love Field Airport, which is closer in than DFW.

As advised by hotel staff, The DART (Dallas Area Rail Transit) Light rail runs on 20 minute internals beginning around 5:30 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. at the West End stop (1.5 blocks from the hotel) and drops off at the Pearl Station which is about 4 blocks away. The Adams Mark Hotel is right across from the Pearl Station. Allow 10 to 15 minutes ride time. The last light rail train arrives at the West End approximately 11:40 p.m. Consult DART for current information.

We are encouraging SIG folks to come to Dallas this year. Our SIG is offering another well-planned MLA program, our usual business meeting, a highly anticipated social, and just plain getting together.

Should you have any questions, et al., please advise. I will update, amend, and repeat as need be.
