The Hotel San Carlos will be our SIG hotel headquarters at MLA, May, 2006. We are holding a block for 15 rooms from May 17-26, 2005. (10 room block for May 17 and 18 only). Located at 202 North Central Avenue, the San Carlos is also two blocks from the Hyatt and one block from the Wyndham, which are the MLA headquarters hotels; and similar distance to the Phoenix Civic Plaza, in the very heart of Phoenix’s historic district. (There are sessions at the Hyatt, and there might be sessions at the Wyndham or the Civic Plaza, at this writing). Established in 1928 and family owned, The San Carlos (like the Menger) is a registered historical property and reflects historic central Phoenix, and its renaissance.

Our special group rate is $106.00 per night (guaranteed), either single or double occupancy, plus 12.00% tax (at present), and includes a continental breakfast. Accommodation types consist of double, two doubles, and queen bedded rooms. When making your reservation, specify that you are part of the "Special Interest Group." The hotel will attempt to be flexible with regard to earlier arrival and later departure dates. If you are interested in the suites, while our contract does not provide for that, you should feel free to make inquiries as to rates and availability.

I visited the Hotel San Carlos in downtown Phoenix this a.m. It is very cool, built in 1920 something. The rooms are small, as is often the case with historic hotels, but there are suites with 2 rooms and also adjoining rooms. Many movie stars have stayed there – one of their claims to fame is being the first hotel in Phx with air conditioning. They have the Mae West room, Clark Gabel and Marilyn Monroe, etc. all of which are named thus because these people actually stayed in the rooms. (of course, I can’t really prove this…..) There is a 3rd floor “rooftop” pool with tables and sitting area which is very nice, also off the lobby is a restaurant, full bar, and a place where they serve continental breakfast. There is also a café which serves breakfast and lunch right off the lobby, and next door is an Irish Pub. There is parking in a nearby lot for $5 a day and a bus station very close. Bill F. will be happy to know there is also a ghost.

I liked the place, it was clean and family owned. (Not “family” owned, but owned by a family.) Wireless internet throughout, coffee pots in the rooms, but refrigerators only in the suites. Very close to the convention center, like 2 blocks. Not as close to the nice gay bar as I was thinking it was, but still quite walkable, maybe 4-5 blocks. Hmmm, that’s all that is coming to me now. Any questions?
