Hello from the Co-Editors

No doubt you will recognize the names of your editors. Let us assure you that the title, editor, is pro tem if there ever was a pro tem. Your editors will be your editors until all is right again with the universe. But first, let us put blame where blame properly lies: every single one of you. Except David Midyette who gracefully agreed to help out as editor in the future. We have yet to accept his offer, but will do so very soon. But, where were we? Oh, yes, blame. David will, we are sure, be looking for a co-editor. Here is a chance to redeem yourselves by volunteering. Please do so post haste, lest another issue of this newsletter show up months late and barely dressed. Like this one.

Last year, the editors referred to this issue of the newsletter as a post-MLA meeting issue. The tardiness of this particular issue makes it more appropriately called the pre-pre-MLA issue, but, regardless of who is really to blame (and you do know who you are), we apologize deeply for being so dilatory in attending to this task. It isn't as if we didn't take it seriously. We tried desperately to find someone else to do it but to no avail. Fortunately, by being so very, very late, we've managed to add another milestone to our Colleagues' News section. At least this issue will have shoes if not legs.

Herein, you will find a message from the 2006-2007 co-conveners: Dale Prince and Jacqueline Leskovec. We also have information on our housing arrangements for the 2007 annual meeting in Philadelphia, ane we keep you up to date on the gossip with Colleagues' News.

Message from the Co-Conveners

At this writing, Thanksgiving [don't you mean Easter?--eds] is bearing down like a freight-train overburdened with Tofurkey, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, Makers Mark manhattans, and 3 extra pounds. And, in the spirit of that season, your co-conveners would like to take this space to thank all of you who have helped to make the LGBTHSL SIG a successful and welcoming organization.

As always, if it were not for the efforts of the web site maintainers, Chris Shaffer and Greg Bodin, this message would never make it beyond the writing stage. So we raise a toast in their direction: Salut! May your code always pass verification. (Although, we would like to point out that web site maintenance pulls in way more AHIP points than co-convener. We're just saying.)

The SIG has been, to the recollection of the co-conveners, an active partner in MLA programming, and the coming year is no exception. Thanks to Jon Crossno, Bill Fleming, and David Keddle, the SIG will be participating in two programs: "Power to the People: Serving the Underserved," and "€œThe Politics of Health Information: Keeping the New Barbarians at Bay." Cheers! we say to our committee. May all your barbarians be invited ones.

Anne Seymour has graciously accepted our invitation to slave away at social accommodations for the meeting in Philadelphia, on top of slaving away to support the needs of the larger MLA group. For this we blow her kisses and raise a glass: Santé, because she's going to need it.

And, finally, and always, Richard Klein for his continued support of the SIG. Without him, we'd be just another group of homeless people in Philadelphia. L'Chaim! May your own travels be as full as you help ours to be.

In summation, without the efforts of many people, the SIG ceases to be vital. We thank all of you who have served on committees or simply made the presence of our group known. Without you, the SIG would fail in its efforts to represent and educate.

Now, on to things less mushy: Dale Prince will be ending his term of office this year in Philadelphia. Should anyone wish to bear the burden of co-convener duties with Jacqueline Leskovec, please cogitate on the matter and present yourself as a candidate. Remember: a candidate for co-convener is not a candidate for Newsletter Editor, a position only partially filled. What this means: if you volunteer for the less onerous task of co-convener, you cannot be dragooned into being Editor. Get it?

We look forward to seeing you in Philadelphia.

2007 Housing Update

Richard Klein has reserved a block of 20 rooms for the SIG at the Holiday Inn Express Philadelphia-Midtown, 1305-11Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107.

Our special group rate is $139.00 per night, either single or double occupancy, plus (at present) 14.00% tax. Rate includes a deluxe continental breakfast.

Reservations may be guaranteed with a major credit card. Reservations are taken at 1-800-5-MIDTOWN, and please mention you are part of the Special Interest Group. When making reservations, make sure you obtain and save your confirmation number. It is advisable to get the name of the person you spoke with, along with date and time. Direct hotel telephone number is 215-735-9300; fax is 215-732-2682. Cancellation policy requires notification by 6:00 p.m. day of arrival to avoid one night’s room, plus tax.

It is also recommended to make your reservations earlier rather than later, especially if you will be arriving and departing at the pre and post "periphery times." Mid to late May is very pronounced with college graduations in Philadelphia. For instance, most of the hotels are sold out May 11-14 for University of Pennsylvania's graduation; and in the hotel neighborhood is Thomas Jefferson Medical School who will be having theirs around this time.

Check-in time is 3:00 p.m.; check-out time is 1:00 p.m.

More information about the hotel and how to register may be found on the SIG Web site at http://lgbt.mlanet.org/2007housing.html

After serving as vice-president/president-elect for two years, Richard Barry assumed the office of President of the Interagency on Information Resources for Nursing, Inc.   He is replacing Warren Hawkes, who is now the past-president.  Each of these positions is for a two year period.

The Interagency Council on Information Resources for Nursing, Inc., ( www.icirn.org ) is an organization of organizations with a mission to promote nursing resources and along the way create some. The ICIRN has been around since the 1960s, and the organizational members (about 30) send a representative to the meetings who are either a nurse or a librarian.  ICIRN has a meeting in March and October as the main opportunity to conduct business, otherwise it is completed via the Internet.  The most important product of ICIRN is the biannual creation of "Essential Nursing Resources"(ENR).  ENR is published in the National League for Nursing's publication Perspectives, usually in fall of odd numbered years. ENR is also available on the NLN web site and there is a link on the ICIRN web site.  The ENR covers a wide range of resources for nurses such as Archives, Audiovisuals, Bioethics, Drugs, Toxicology, Grants, Informatics, Statistics, etc.
