Hello from the Co-Editors

Well a big ol’ HOWDY from your newsletter co-editors. Yes, you heard right CO-editors, kind of CO-dependent, but it works I guess. As it happens David Midyette has been removed from a pile of mothballs and renovated for a return journey as an editor of this esteemed publication. It wasn’t all that difficult a task, and with the promise that Sheila would do all the work and David would just sit around looking pretty, it was a rather easy sell. So what has he been doing in the mothball pile, well he’s glad you asked.  (Ed. Note: you may now skip ahead to the more exciting pieces of the newsletter.)  David has been continuing his work as the corporate librarian of a pharmaceutical company in sunny Southern California. He continues to complain bitterly about paying three times the cost for housing than the rest of the country and has recovered from his fainting spell caused by a $600.00 electric bill this past summer. He and his partner Scott continue to parent a pack of Labs now four in number (Lucky 10, Miranda 7, Colby and Jack 2), a cat (CeeCee 2), and an aquarium of demanding fish. Mind you the pack of labs now amounts to almost 400lbs. as the two youngest Midyette children are over 100lbs. each.  Talk about losing real estate on the bed, those two take up the whole bloody thing!  Professionally, he’s still working on AHIP points, refining his Dialog and PubMed searching skills, and dealing with the never ending list of search requests. He pines for the days when all the requests were about Medicine and not API manufacturers, SBAs, EIR/483s, and a whole host of other things he was never trained to deal with in school!  Okay, enough for now. On to our more interesting editor, the one, the only, the incomparable Sheila Snow-Croft, Sheila a few words if you please . . . .

Hello everyone,
I’m looking forward to seeing  you all at MLA in Philadelphia, and am disappointed that David won’t be joining us. I can be persuaded to talk about my own dogs – and about me – over cocktails. Please plan on attending the social events, and thanks ever so much to Anne Seymour for her work planning them. We will also be needing a new Co-Chair, so if any of you are out there lurking and haven’t participated recently, please consider volunteering.

Message from the Co-Conveners

At this writing, Thanksgiving [don't you mean Easter?--eds] is bearing down like a freight-train overburdened with Tofurkey, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, Makers Mark manhattans, and 3 extra pounds. And, in the spirit of that season, your co-conveners would like to take this space to thank all of you who have helped to make the LGBTHSL SIG a successful and welcoming organization.

As always, if it were not for the efforts of the web site maintainers, Chris Shaffer and Greg Bodin, this message would never make it beyond the writing stage. So we raise a toast in their direction: Salut! May your code always pass verification. (Although, we would like to point out that web site maintenance pulls in way more AHIP points than co-convener. We're just saying.)

The SIG has been, to the recollection of the co-conveners, an active partner in MLA programming, and the coming year is no exception. Thanks to Jon Crossno, Bill Fleming, and David Keddle, the SIG will be participating in two programs: "Power to the People: Serving the Underserved," and "€œThe Politics of Health Information: Keeping the New Barbarians at Bay." Cheers! we say to our committee. May all your barbarians be invited ones.

Anne Seymour has graciously accepted our invitation to slave away at social accommodations for the meeting in Philadelphia, on top of slaving away to support the needs of the larger MLA group. For this we blow her kisses and raise a glass: Santé, because she's going to need it.

And, finally, and always, Richard Klein for his continued support of the SIG. Without him, we'd be just another group of homeless people in Philadelphia. L'Chaim! May your own travels be as full as you help ours to be.

In summation, without the efforts of many people, the SIG ceases to be vital. We thank all of you who have served on committees or simply made the presence of our group known. Without you, the SIG would fail in its efforts to represent and educate.

Now, on to things less mushy: Dale Prince will be ending his term of office this year in Philadelphia. Should anyone wish to bear the burden of co-convener duties with Jacqueline Leskovec, please cogitate on the matter and present yourself as a candidate. Remember: a candidate for co-convener is not a candidate for Newsletter Editor, a position only partially filled. What this means: if you volunteer for the less onerous task of co-convener, you cannot be dragooned into being Editor. Get it?

We look forward to seeing you in Philadelphia.

Dale Prince & Jacqueline Lescovec Because the newsletter editors keep bugging us for an article and because we know how very difficult it is to get good newsletter help, we’ve reluctantly caved to their wishes. Plus? We want y’all to know that we care. Plus? We’re excited about MLA this year and want to share the excitement. So much is happening, so many things to do. And, while that’s true for every MLA annual meeting, it’s even more true for this one. Two words: Mütter Museum. Eight more words: Chevalier Jackson Collection of objects swallowed and removed.

These things, of course, may not match your own interests (even though they have a woman made of soap); there are lots more things to do in the City of Brotherly Love. There’s a very big bell there and some other things, although none, frankly, as interesting as wax renderings of eye disease problems.

Additionally, there is the MLA annual conference where, once again, the SIG is making a strong showing with two sponsored programs:

·        Power to the People (Co-Sponsors: CAPHIS, Hospital Libraries, Chiropractic Libraries, Relevant Issues African American Medical Librarians Alliance, Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Mental Health), May 21, 2007, 3:00 PM – 4:30 PM, Grand Ballroom AB.

·        The Politics of Health Information: Keeping the New Barbarians at Bay (Co-Sponsors: Relevant Issues, Chiropractic Libraries), May 21, 2007, 10:30am – 12:00PM, Room 305-306.

While we have included location information for each of these programs, please be sure to check your MLA Program for definitive information.

Our SIG business meeting will occur immediately prior to “Power to the People” on May 21, from 2PM – 3PM in Room 401. Yes, poster sessions will be taking place at that time, but the outcry against morning meetings has been deafening. We meet at the break of dawn or during posters. We wish it could be otherwise. If you have matters you wish to discuss at the meeting, for instance, should you wish to nominate someone to be co-convener, please contact Dale or Jacqueline before the 11th of May for inclusion in the agenda.

Our annual group dinner will be Sunday, May 20 at 7:00 PM. Tavern on Camac, http://www.tavernoncamac.com/.

And our social will be Monday, May 21 from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM at Bump Lounge, http://www.bumplounge.com/.

We hope to see you at both of these events.

Oh, and, once again, Dale Prince will be stepping down from his position as co-convener before he is impeached. Should you feel that you or someone you know can fill his, um, shoes, please nominate.

Dale Prince, Co-Convener (2005-2007)

Jacqueline Leskovec, Co-Convener (2006-2008)

SIG Sessions in Philly

Update on SIG Programs

The MLA LGBT SIG is co-sponsoring two programs at MLA 2007 in Philadelphia: both on Monday, May 21.  Your 2007 Program Task Force – Jon Crossno, Bill Fleming, and David Keddle – have worked on getting us involved in these programs, and they promise to be extremely invigorating, I think.  (Believe me; one of us is very, very upset that he won’t be able to attend this year’s meeting.)

The Politics of Health Information: Keeping the New Barbarians at Bay

The Relevant Issues and Chiropractic Libraries sections and the LGBT SIG are co-sponsoring “The Politics of Health Information: Keeping the New Barbarians at Bay.”  This program will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon in Room 305-306.

Speakers at this program will seek to address the role of librarians in protecting basic science and health information and ensuring free access to it when that information may be in conflict with political extremism.  This is especially true with sound and proven information that is revised or distorted to support opposing opinions and may be quickly disseminated electronically.

The SIG’s own Paul Blobaum is one of the speakers for this thought-provoking program.

Power to the People: Serving the Underserved

The Consumer and Patient Health Information, Hospital Libraries, Chiropractic Libraries, and Relevant Issues sections and the African American Medical Librarians Alliance, Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Mental Health, and LGBT SIGs are co-sponsoring “Power to the People: Serving the Underserved.”  This program will held from 3 to 4 p.m. in Grand BallroomAB.

A panel of invited speakers will focus on the role of collaboration between public and medical libraries (both academic and hospital) in doing outreach to underserved populations.  The information will be practical, focusing on how to create outreach programs – i.e., what works and what does not.

Be There!  And Volunteer!  (**nudge, nudge, wink, wink**)

So you’ve got two definite things to do on Monday.  Please be sure to attend either or both of the programs.

Finally, if no one has volunteered to be Program Chair for next year’s meeting in Chicago, I strongly encourage someone to do so.  It is an excellent way to see how the national meeting is pulled together, if you’ve never been directly involved before.

(The non-attendee to this year’s meeting will confess to a certain trepidation about taking on the role, but he discovered that it is an interesting process with an opportunity to interact with all sorts of different people.  And while he did appreciate not having to fly solo, it is something that just one person can do.)

It is very, very important that someone from the SIG attend the MLA Section Planning meetings that are held during the Philly meeting to get our faces visible and voices heard in supporting LGBT-related programs.  Our SIG does have a very good reputation among the sections and other SIGs for presenting quality programming.

The two Section Program Planning meetings will be held as follows:

So please consider volunteering.  If you’re interested, contact our co-conveners – Dale Prince and Jacqueline Leskovec – as soon as possible.

Jon Crossno (non-attendee), Bill Fleming, and David Keddle
