THE BLUEST SKIES YOU'VE EVER SEEN.....SEATTLE!

Your editor speaks (Bill Fleming - bfleming@lib.rush.edu)
# # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # #

In less than a week the 1997 Medical Library Association conference will convene in Seattle. This issue of the newsletter will focus on MLA activities. Information on the business meeting, the pre-meeting meeting, the social, the program, and other assorted tidbits should all be awaiting your perusal. There is also a section which ties it all together so you know at a glance ALL of the SIG's activities. Unfortunately, due to the hectic schedule of Miss Batavia Downes, she could not have a column for this issue. However, she promises a special "Memorial Day" column which she will post independently to the listserv. I'll be waiting!

I don't have much more to say....I am so looking forward to seeing a lot of you again. I'll surely miss those of you who can't make it. I'll drink a Margarita in your honor (I hope most of you are going....what a mess I'll be).

With another year of newsletters ahead (I'm at the halfway point!), I'd like to thank those outgoing leaders who helped me fill this newsletter with important info. I wish the incoming leaders well and at the same time issue my "hands-on-hips" warning: you BETTER get your submissions in on time.

Toodles!

Bill

AN INVITATION TO THE 3RD ANNUAL SIG PROGRAM!

WHO: Simon LeVay, PhD

WHAT: "Changing Our Minds: Queer Science and the Use/Abuse of Research into Homosexuality."

WHERE: Room 612, Washington State Convention Center

WHEN: Sunday, 25 May 1997 2:00 - 3:30 p.m.

Simon LeVay, a neurobiologist and gay man who reported in 1991 on brain differences between gay and straight men, will discuss what science has to say about the development of sexual orientation, and where "biological fate" and "chosen lifestyle" may intersect. He will also discuss how the science may impact, either negatively or positively, on the psychological well-being of gay people and their status in society."

This year's SIG Program is co-sponsored by the Mental Health Librarians Section.

Hope to see everyone there!

A VISION SESSION FOR YOU...A PRE-MEETING MEETING

by Sally Harvey (harvey@medcat.library.swmed.edu)

In response to a discussion which took place on the SIG listserv, we have planned a facilitated session to revisit our position statement and refocus our energies. I would like to invite all people interested in the future of the SIG to attend and contribute. This Special Interest Group will become whatever we create, and all of our voices are important. That being said, here is the current date and time for this session

Monday, May 26th at 10:30 a.m. Room to be announced, hopefully in the Pacific Plaza Hotel.

If all agree, I will be faciliting the session. As facilitator, I will not be participating in the content of the session. The outcomes we will be striving for are 1.) either a re-commitment from the group to the current Position Statement, or a new Position Statement we can all agree upon, and 2.) the identification of a few, high priority projects to move forward in the coming year. I plan to follow this general outline:

A. Post the current Position Statement
Do a "Plus/Delta" session with the whole group, beginning with what we like about the current statement, and ending with what we would like to see added or changed about it.

Record results on flip chart.

B. Break up into small groups of about 3 or 4, with each group answering the following questions:

1. One project I am willing to work on to further the goals/purpose of the SIG is...

2. One thing I think the SIG should commit to doing on a continuing basis is....

Share the small group results and prioritize the items listed. Ask for volunteers to commit to working on high priority items in the coming year.

I hope you will all make every effort to attend!

DINNER IS SERVED....THE SIG GETS SOCIAL

edited by Bill Fleming (information previously "published" via listserv by Tamara Turner)

Just an update to let you know that the SIG dinner is on schedule. Willie Vaughn, the manager of Jack's Bistro, will arrange the restaurant tables so that we can sit in a circle rather than be split up. There will be a full bar, but of course, drinks are extra.

Best news, he dropped the dinner price to $15 a person because the cost of cod has dropped. [As of this writing a definite way to pay has not been finalized, but a good bet is to just bring $15 cash or a $15 check made payable to Jack's Bistro with you when you arrive at the dinner]

We'll have the whole restaurant to ourselves that evening. The Gay Archives group has given me a batch of their maps of historic gay Seattle ($1 each) for anyone who is interested that evening--since we couldn't fit their tour in.

The weather has been fabulous (if you like sun), and I am worried that you will not have the opportunity to experience our gray, overcast skies...

-Tamara

JACK'S BISTRO is located at 405 15th. The phone number is 324-9625.

NORMAN KESTER, EDITOR OF ANTHOLOGY OF COMING OUT ANTHOLOGY FOR QUEER LIBRARIANS TO LAUNCH BOOK IN SAN FRANCISCO FOR ALA
# # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # #

"I'm deeply honoured to meet with my contributors and many librarians who have supported this ground-breaking book about our professional experineces in libraries," states Norman G. Kester, a Canadian public librarian who has edited his scholarly work--_Liberating Minds: The Stories and Professional Lives of Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Librarians and Their Advocates_ published by McFarland in time for Gay Pride.

Many contributors, especially American librarians and a few special librarians are contributors to this work. "Really, this is the first time that so many queer librarians and our advocates have spoken frankly about their work and lives. The book will inform the library profession more about our own needs, advance our cause in libraries and further queer library studies."

A secondary aim of the book is highlight the issues posed by queer booksellers, volunteer community archivists and library users.

Two launches and readings are planned in San Francisco:

Half of the contributors will read from their pieces at a Different Light Bookstore on Monday June 30 at 7 p.m. The major launch and more readings will take place on Tuesday July 1 at the Eureka Valley-Harvey Milk Branch of the San Francisco Public Library, also at 7 p.m. A social with light refreshments will follow. HQ76.3/New England and a Different Light Bookstore have graciously sponsored the major launch. Signed copies will be available for purchase at both events.

A major article written by Mr. Kester is to be published in _American Libraries_--the June issue on the significance of_Liberating Minds_ to the library profession.

                          WHO'S THE SPECIAL SIG MEMBER?
Answer the clues to the following SIG members. Take the letters in the
circles ( O') and scramble together the name of yet another SIG member.

a. We met him at last years meeting; he is currently the Internet
Coordinator for the NN/LM Southeastern Atlantic Region (at least
that's what his signature file says)

     __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ O

b. He recently moved cross-country; he eats a lot of bananas

     __ __ __ __ __ __ __ O __ __ __

c. Her last foray into square-dancing involved the juggling of scarves

d. Her bibliographies are known the world over

e. She has just recently relocated to Philadelphia

     __ __ __ __ __ __ O __ __ __ __ __ __

g. I believe it was her idea of getting everyone together to discuss the
SIGs vision which evolved into the "pre-meeting meeting". She
	works with Sally and Mitch

     __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ O __ __ __

h. His abundant energy can sometimes be irritating; his favorite
things in the world are meatloaf and drag (not necessarily in that
order); Bill Karnoscak is one of his bosses

     __ __ __ __ O __ __ __ __ __ __

I. Former newsletter editor; he has his own healthcare web site and is
possibly the smartest man I know

j. One of the "angels" (not Bill, not Brian). He has a charming
southern accent and works for the Health Sciences Consortium; he
once delivered a paper for one of my and Bill Karnoscak's bosses

     __ O __ __ __ __ __ __ __

k. Hailing from Bay City, Michigan, this self-described "heterosexual
supporter" of the SIG (just one of many) has been instrumental in
	many SIG discussions.

     __ __ __ __ __ __ __

      __ __ __ __ O __ __ __ __

l. Our current female-co-chair; is now in Texas having come from the land of cheese

     O __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __

Now, put them all together to solve this mystery clue:
     HOT TAMALES MOSTLY LINGER
