I was going to write about the beautiful fall weather, the changing of the
leaves, the looming of the holiday season....okay, so it's snowing at this
very second where I am, and the holiday season is HERE, so my plans have
changed a bit.

This newsletter is full of information. First, there is information from
the Seattle conference which we need to make sure we keep working on.
Second, there is information on the upcoming conference in Philadelphia.
Lodging and Program are the first installments. Fun social stuff should
come in the next newsletter. Anne, I'm looking forward to working with
you on that!

In the meantime, enjoy. Hope you're all having a great fall/winter, and
hope to hear from you in the coming months.

Time has certainly zoomed by since MLA Seattle. It's hard to believe that
we're already headed into Thanksgiving, and that Christmas paraphernalia
is already appearing in our local Hallmark stores! As we approach the end
of the year, it seems like an appropriate time to take a Janus-type look
at the SIG - scoping out where we've been as well as where we are, and
where we might be headed.

For those of you who may be new to the SIG (or who may be "memory
challenged" and need a refresher), please allow us to re-introduce
ourselves. Robb is Director of Library Services at Elizabeth General
Medical Center in Elizabeth, NJ. He has been involved with the SIG for
two years, and was program chair for this year's program in Seattle. Jean
is Assistant Director for Information Services at Levy Library, Mount
Sinai Medical Center in New York City. Jean is a charter member of the
SIG, and worked on coordinating programming in both Washington, DC and
Kansas City.

Looking Back: Seattle: In addition to our usual events of programming,
business meeting and social function, we also had an additional meeting at
the MLA meeting in Seattle this past summer. Many of you who didn't attend
the conference may remember reading about this some months ago, in Sally
Harvey's June posting to the listserv, and in the SIG Meeting Minutes.

This additional gathering, informally called our "Pre-meeting Meeting,"
was essentially a planning and visioning workshop. Approximately 15
people attended. As a springboard for discussion, members worked in both
large and small groups to provide answers to two questions, i.e., " What
one project am I willing to work on to further the SIG's purpose/goals?"
and "What is one thing you think the SIG should commit to doing on a
continuing basis?" The result was a productive group examination and
review of the SIG's purpose, accomplishments, and potential.

Present, or Where We Are Now: Many ideas were generated during the course
of the "Visioning Meeting". Three of those ideas have been implemented or
in process:

One group volunteered to write a Mission Statement which would supplement,
complement and expand upon ideas included in the SIG's Position Statement.
This group is still gathering its collective thoughts, and has its sights
set on Spring 1998 for completion of an initial draft to be shared with
members prior to the SIG Business Meeting in Philadelphia. So watch the
listserv for reports of progress of the Ad Hoc Mission Statement Group.

A second goal which came out of the meeting was the enhancement and
maintenance of the SIG Web Site. This project has been ably undertaken
and fulfilled by our colleagues Chris Shaffer (shaffer@uic.edu) and Bryan
Vogh (vogh@umabnet.ab.umd.edu). If you have suggestions for pertinent
links or comments on the Web site, please send them to our Web Masters.
(They also would not mind chocolate chip cookies if you care to send any.)
The Web Site, linked to the MLA home page, continues to promote SIG
visibility, credibility and professionalism within the association and
outside our medical library community.

A third project which came up in the planning meeting was the creation and
maintenance of a more inclusive membership list. This has been
accomplished through the ongoing efforts of Tom Flemming and our Web
Masters. The SIG now has both an "open" membership list, which appears on
the Web page, and a "closed" list, for those members who wish to declare
their membership in the SIG a bit more discreetly. Both lists are
valuable tools for networking and for keeping in touch with our
gay/lesbian/bisexual colleagues. Robb and Jean are the "guardians" of the
closed list. If you wish to identify and make contact with a LesBiGay
colleague in a particular area of the country, and can't find one on the
open favorite things in the world are meatloaf and drag (not necessarily
in that order); Bill Karnoscak is one of his bosses
