GREETINGS AND INTRODUCTIONS FROM OUR NEW CO-CHAIRS
From Peter....
Greetings from the Co-Chair Peter Jones. I currently live in Westford, Vermont a town with about 2,000 residents and only 1 paved road. I am a full time employee for the Champlain Valley AHEC as their Information Resource Coordinator, And I work half-time as the local hospital's one person library-librarian. I also am Vice President of the New Hampshire/Vermont Health Science Libraries and I am on the board of trustees for my local library. In my spare time I also serve on the board of the Vermont Rainbow Business Association (LGB Business Org), and volunteer in town activities, like our summer concerts in the green and farmer's markets. I've been with the SIG since before there was a SIG, I met Jerry Perry through email back in 94 and he was (and still is) a great help to me both personally (in 94) and professionally. My first duties with the SIG was as unofficial treasurer. I look forward to my duties as Co-Chair (Co-Queen) and I shall wear my crown with pride.
And from Emily...
Greetings from Co-Chair Emily Hull. I live in Seattle, Washington close to the center of the city and work at the Health Sciences Library at the University of Washington. My current job titles are Networked Information Librarian and Acting Head of Curriculum Support Services. I'm the web editor for the Pacific Northwest Chapter of MLA. I'm also president of a campus group, Gay & Lesbian University Employees (GLUE). Most of my free time lately has been spent fostering five feral cats in our basement.
I joined MLA and the SIG in 1997 when I took my first health sciences library position. At my first SIG meeting I volunteered to serve on the team that drafted the current mission statement. I look forward to getting to know the members of the SIG better when we see each other in Vancouver next May.

Thanks was extended to all those who worked so hard on the SIG mission statement. No further discussion occurred, and the mission statement was approved as written.
Announcement of new officers:
New SIG Co-Chairs - Peter Jones and Emily Hull
New Program Chair - Bryan Vogh
All other positions are still serving their terms.
A suggestion for a future conference program was raised by Richard Klein. He is familiar with a travel newsletter called Out and About which discusses LGB travel health issues. He felt this would also make a good program topic. Dorrie Slutsker suggested broadening the topic to include ALL travel health issues. This was agreeable to the rest of the attendees. Richard Klein agreed to be part of a program task force for 2001 which will also include Bill Karnoscak, Jamie Lamkin and Tom Flemming. Possible MLA Sections to partner with for this program include International Cooperation, Public Health, Consumer and Patient Health.
Local arrangement issues were discussed with Richard Klein offering to trouble shoot any problems people might be having with the Chicago accommodations. Arrangements for Vancouver have been narrowed down to either the St. Regis or the Sylvia. Characteristics of each were discussed, and the attendees agreed to go with the St. Regis, mostly due to proximity to the conference.
Jerry Perry is taking the financial/fund raising for SIGS issue to Section Council. He, Peter and Emily will take the issue to the SIG leaders listserv as well.
Karen brought up the Human Rights Campaign web site listing of LGB professional organizations. She asked if the SIG wanted our organization listed on this. All attendees agreed to this. Karen agreed to notify Bryan and/or Chris to make this happen.
Certificates of appreciation were handed out for various SIG officers and task forces.

ACCOMMODATIONS FOR VANCOUVER 2000
It's the St. Regis Hotel for our MLA headquarters in May, 2000. We are continuing the tradition of boutique type hotels, like the Pacific Plaza in Seattle and Motel 6 in Chicago. The St. Regis is in the heart of downtown Vancouver, 620 Dunsmuir, cross-street, Seymour. The hotel is just a 5-minute walk to MLA's convention site. The sessions take place at the Waterfront Centre and Pan Pacific Hotels, all part of a convention complex at the waterfront.
The St. Regis has been fully renovated since 1997, with clean, comfortable--if not overly spacious rooms. There are 72 rooms in a 6-story building. As it is a renovated, but older structure, it may not meet all the needs of the physically challenged. The hotel is also within walking distance of many of the interesting areas of Vancouver, including Gastown, possibly Chinatown, Yaletown, Robson Street (a.k.a. Robsonstrasse). Also close by are some excellent museums. And you'll find a very large indoor shopping mall with an extensive food court just a block away. Davie Street area nightlife is do-able, distance-wise. Public transportation in this area is excellent. And there is a Starbucks just 10 feet away from the hotel.
We are holding a block of 20 rooms from May 4 until May 11. They consist of 14 rooms containing 2 double beds. The remaining 6 rooms each contain one queen bed. The rooms with 2 double beds can accommodate up to 4 persons; the rooms with queen bed can accommodate up to 2 persons. Please note: room rate is based on 1 or 2 persons. There is an additional nightly charge of $10.00 CAD per person in excess of 2 persons in the room. Our SIG room rate is $105.00 CAD per night, plus 17% tax. (Up to 7% of the tax is refundable for non-Canadian citizens, but a form needs to be filled out). Exchange rate as of today would be about $70.79 USD, vs. $105.00 CAD. The room rate does include a continental breakfast. Yes, folks, the communal breakfast is back!!!
Cancellation policy requires 24 hours advance notification. The St. Regis is willing to be flexible for mis-arrivals due to transportation problems, etc. These rates should hold if you want to extend your time a bit before or after. But it is advisable to make these plans earlier, rather than later. Reservations can be guaranteed with a credit card to 1-800-770-7929. For reservations purpose, refer to our group as "Special Interest Group." So when making reservations, please identify you are part of the "Special Interest Group." Reservations can also be made through e-mail: info@stregishotel.com --and, again, identify yourself as part of the "Group."
It is always better to make your reservations early; you can always cancel or adjust, subject to availability. The month of May begins prime tourist season in Vancouver; so things will most likely become rather tight. Our arrangements, this time, do not provide for a contract; so there is no cut-off date for room release. Rooms will be rented on an availability basis. I will monitor our reservations, and keep in regular contact with the hotel.
Private shuttle service is available to and from the airport running about $10.00 CAD at this time, one way. A cab ride, to and from the airport, runs about $22.00 CAD at this time on way.
Remember, Vancouver's lush greenery is due to its fair quota of precipitation. But it will more likely sprinkle than pour buckets of rain. Pack an umbrella anyway. Also, sunrises will be early, and sunsets will be late due to Vancouver's northerly latitude.
For any questions, etc., please feel free to advise. I will update, amend, and repeat as need be.
Richard
PROGRAM NEWS FOR MLA 2000
The SIG is planning to co-sponsor with Relevant Issues a panel of invited speakers to address the issues of womens health, breast cancer in general and breast cancer among lesbians. We are still awaiting word on whether or not our proposal will be accepted. More to come....

MLA BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTIONS FEATURES ONE OF OUR OWN!
When Rachael Anderson announced the slate of candidates for MLA's 2000/2001 election recently, SIG member Tom Flemming's name appeared on the list. Tom is one of four candidates for election to the Board of Directors; two of the slate will be elected.
Candidate bio's and statements will appear in the November issue of the _MLA News_, and the ballot will be mailed directly to all members of MLA in November. Mark your ballots and return them in the envelope provided by the 17th of December in order to have your vote count! Please be sure to vote in the election; MLA needs to know that we value the ability to select our leaders.

TRANSITIONS AND MEMBER NEWS
* Jean has a new job!.
Jean Sullivant has changed jobs. She is still at Mount Sinai, but not in the Library. She is now Project Coordinator at the Dept. of Geriatrics. Her new address and e-mail are on the SIG membership roster. For convenience sake, however, her new e-mai address is jean.sullivant@mssm.edu. She reports that she loves her new job, which entails planning, coordinating and carrying out a variety of EBM projects in Geriatrics. The job includes writing, researching, appraising literature, and editing. And she is pleased that in this job she doesn't have to supervise anyone. The supervision thing was getting a bit "old". Also, she gets to go exotic places such as Rome (for the Cochrane Colloquium meeting) and Hamilton, Ontario, to see what they're up to and how they do it at McMaster. She hopes to see all in Vancouver.
* Barbara Kormelink has retired!
Her new email address is kormelib@home.com.
* Robb has a new job!
Robb Mackes has accepted a new position as Associate Director, Medical Library & Patient Resource Center, Kessler Medical Rehabilitation, Research & Education Corporation (KMRREC), West Orange, NJ.
