I.    Message from the Newsletter Co-Editors

Welcome to the grand and glorious 2nd issue of this year’s SIG newsletter, presented by your illustrious co-editors. Yes, yes, we know. This isn’t October. Or January. We WANTED to publish mid-year issues. And we even started work on one of them. … And then plans went awry. But we’ve survived whatever pain and suffering we’ve each gone through … and here we are, bringing you this essential pre-meeting issue. This is where you’ll get all the up-to-date information on the SIG’s comings, doings, and goings in San Diego. Plus we’ve got a few other member bios to tantalize you. (Don’t worry! We’ll let everyone have a chance to answer them … sometime.) So off we go! Viva San Diego!! The HQ Crewe

II.  Welcome from the Co-Chairs

Where has the year gone? It seems like almost yesterday when we left Dallas. In less than a month we will all be seeing each other again, this time in sunny San Diego, home of the Padres, the world famous zoo, and Lego Land! This will be my first trip to San Diego, and I am looking forward to the sunny weather, the beaches, the many Indian reservation casinos, and Lego Land! Oh yeah … and I’m looking forward to the 2003 MLA Annual Meeting.

Plans for the SIG are still being worked out, but here’s what we know so far: The program (which Bryan Vogh and Chris Shaffer have done a fabulous job with) is on Monday May 5, from 3:30 – 5 p.m. The SIG social is that Monday night. Sally Harvey is working out the details. More to come on that. The business meeting is scheduled for Tuesday May 6, from 3 – 4:30 p.m.   I apologize if this conflicts with other section programming. In an effort to ensure our meeting did not conflict with the Relevant Issues meeting, I neglected to think that it might conflict with something else. And who would have thought they would schedule business meetings and programming simultaneously? Sigh.

Other events will be planned, and as many are staying at the Days Inn, I am working out a message system for us to keep up with each other. The agenda for the business meeting is also listed in this newsletter. Please, bring your ideas and willingness to keep the momentum of our programming going. I want to make sure we have a program in place before we leave San Diego. Also, we will be holding elections for a male co-chair.

Yes, my 15 minutes of fame are over. The SIG is in a constant state of transition. Since Dallas, we have seen former co-chairs Bill Karnoscak and Mitch Walters change directions in their lives and careers. They will surely be missed. But in their place, we have had the chance to meet and work with many new colleagues who have breathed new life into the SIG.

As I “give up my crown” (as a pageant freak I had to use that phrase) as co-chair this year, I want to take the time to thank all of you for the opportunity to help lead this group. The best of luck to Gail and to my successor, as you bring the SIG to newer heights. I am looking forward to seeing you all in San Diego.

And Jerry, the Blackberry Merlot is on me.

Bill I can’t let the newsletter go to press without thanking Bill for his work as co-chair the past two years, and especially his support this past year as he eased me gently into my co-chair role. I too am looking forward to all the SIG activities in San Diego. I have a lot of responsibilities at MLA this year, and SIG ‘duties’ are 100% carrot for me.

I’m looking forward to getting to know old and new members this year and to helping the good work of the SIG continue.

See you soon. Gail

III.     MLA ’03 San Diego Housing Update

SIG Hotel: Days Inn Hotel Circle by Seaworld/Zoo
543 Hotel Circle South
San Diego, CA 92108
Phone: 619-297-8800
Fax: 619-298-6029
Reservations: 800-227-4743
http://www.the.daysinn.com/sandiego04192

A block of 20 rooms had been reserved with Days Inn for SIG use, and as of March 24, 16 rooms had been taken. The guaranteed room rate was initially set at $85.00 (plus tax) per night, but after some recent discussions with the hotel’s sales department, a lower rate of $79.00 (plus tax), single or double occupancy, has now been negotiated. Anyone who had already reserved a room at the $85.00 rate will be adjusted to the lower rate automatically. April 1 was the deadline to reserve rooms at the guaranteed room rate, but the hotel will try to honor the rate after April 1, subject to availability. However, the rates could also easily start at $109.00 (plus tax) per night.

To make reservations, call 800-227-4743 and mention “Special Interest Group.” For further information, refer to the Housing Information from our SIG Web site, or feel free to contact Richard Klein directly either by email at rsklein_98@yahoo.com or by phone at 773-327-4618.

Richard does send his regrets that he will not attending in San Diego, but he does wish all who do attend to have a good time during both the meeting and the social.

VI.    Getting to Know You … (More 11 Questions)

A. Steve Grove

When is your birthday?

September 29, 19 … something??!!!

Where are you located geographically?

Berea, OHIO, and HINCKLEY, OHIO. My partner and I are building (YES , literally putting the house together) a ,7000 sq. ft. Victorian in the middle of some very PRIVATE (ooooooooo!!) woods in Hinckley while we commute from Berea, a surburb of Cleveland. Yes, many of you OLD-TIMERS in the SIG recall me bringing plans to MLA. It continues and has done so since 1997>>>YEA GODS. We will be ANCIENT before it is completed. Want to see PICS? Email me at sgrove@metrohealth.org . Send CASH only.

Where did you get your MLS?

University of Iowa MANY years ago…thank GOD, you didn't ask when? (Well, I am not THAT OLD)

What was the worst part of library school?

Beginning CATALOGING. Our final was doing 3 complete sets of cards in DEWEY, with SEARS HEADINGS. Many of you may not know what those headings are. Just be happy that you don't. ALSO: having to work in the Main library and look at those gorgeous SCANDANAVIAN freshmen!! How do you really feel about cataloging? SEE ABOVE. Actually I catalog now and really enjoy it!!! Especially electronic stuff

What would your mother say was your most embarrassing moment?

When MOM found my stash of SUPERMAN COMICS turned to the CHARLES ATLAS ads … MOM catching me in DRAG might qualify too!!! ALSO: My partner threw a SURPRISE birthday for me. FRIENDS hide the back part of the house. Partner gets very intimate and I am in a state approaching total nudity…and excitement. He suggests we retire to the room where my FRIENDS are. I do …You complete the rest of the story!!!!

What would you say was your mother’s most embarrassing moment?

SEE ABOVE.

How did you come to medical librarianship?

I was in the public library field and just got downsized (OO … I hope not!!). The opportunity is another type of special library opened up and I grabbed it. Love the electronics, searching, etc.

An informationist is …

What else … a library INFORMANT. An interesting concept … specialist as librarian, librarian as specialist

Fondest SIG/MLA memory?

MY FIRST SIG encounter in DC …a fellow med. Librarian and I walked into the specified SIG HOTEL and no one knew us …of course, this was our first time … Several folks came out to ask us what we wanted. Gerry Perry might have been there, I don't recall … Whatever, they had a big PIZZA party on the back veranda … And that first MLA for me was GRAND!!!!

What is the most trivial fact you have rattling around your head?

Minnesota has more than 10,000 lakes! Turns out there are 11,842 lakes in Minnesota (10 acres or larger in size). http://ask.yahoo.com/ask/20020103.html
