WHEREAS the Medical Library Association's Statement of Values states that "the Medical Library Association serves society by improving health through the provision of information for the delivery of health care, the education of health professionals, the conduct of research, and the public's understanding of health", and
WHEREAS the Medical Library Association's Position Statement on AIDS states that "the Medical Library Association will identify and employ innovative strategies to disseminate information concerning AIDS to all members of the health care team, to patients, and to the public", and
WHEREAS the 1994 Report on Anti-Gay Discrimination by the American Association of Physicians for Human Rights states that 67% of physicians and medical students surveyed believe that anti-gay bias toward lesbian/gay/bisexual patients resulted in substandard care ranging from harassing remarks to abusive physical examinations, and
WHEREAS as health care information professionals, we recognize the worth and dignity of all persons regardless of sexual orientation, and we also recognize that discrimination is caused by ignorance and fear which are fostered by misinformation, lack of information, or censorship; and
WHEREAS our clients include gay, lesbian, and bisexual individuals who are also physicians, students, patients and other health care professionals; therefore
BE IT RESOLVED that we will identify, collect and disseminate gay/lesbian/bisexual health care information within this organization in order to enhance the quality and quantity of information available to our colleagues within MLA and within our institutions in order to support the physical and psychological health care concerns of our clients.
